Virgil's Motel

I know this is an almost 4 year old article, but I loved Virgil's!

We live 3 hours from Pigeon forge and Gatlinburg. As a kid my family went to the area several times a year. We ALWAYS stayed at Virgil's. We formed a really close friend ship with he and Mattie. I am 39 now, so I was young, but I have the greatest memories of that motel. My brother, sister, and I, all learned to swim in their pool. My family didnt have alot of money, but we didnt need to spend alot to go! We loved the pool more than anything. We would ride the trolley as kind of a cheap tour of the area. We took groceries most of the time as well, or stopped at Battles grocery store. There are tons of pictures of me as a 4 or 5 year old in my underwear playing in the stream at the Chimneys picnic area. We just got outdoors and had a blast. I continue to take my family as often as I can. We go a few times per year, and they love it as much as I still do.
Virgil and Mattie were wonderful people. They would get tickets to Silver dollar city, and later Dollywood. Mattie always said the tickets were for people who worked for her. She handed my mother a dust rag and asked to clean the desk for her, Mom did as she was asked, and the Mattie handed her some free tickets! She had technically just worked for Virgils. Things like that meant so much to us, and I am still appreciative.

mountain memories

Just wanted to tell you that this story so reminded me of my family. we travelled to the mountains with our parents also. We always stayed in Maggie Valley and ate a Joeys Pancake , when we lost both of our parents we still went every year and always teared up because they loved it so. this past year Joeys closed and we were heart broken. Of course we traveled up to eat there one last time because some memories are so worth it. We also went to the Apple Barn and while we shopped Daddy would walk across the road to the river, now when we go we always go back to Daddy's spot and we always in up shedding a few tears and wishing he was still there. Thank you for sharing your family memories with us and letting me share ours
