An Artist Remembered

Jim Gray’s Legacy lives on through his work

Have you ever been stopped in your tracks at the sight of a splendid natural landscape? Perhaps captured by the glory, even divinity, of a place in the world with perfect symmetry and order? Perfect for you?

Welcome to the work of renowned American artist Jim Gray.

The artwork of Jim Gray has captivated audiences for decades. His unique exploration use of composition and color have rendered thousands of images into exquisite works of art. Jim started as a landscape artist who focused on both maritime and mountain subject matter. As diverse as that can be, he also paid attention and conveyed artistically many aspects of the human condition.

For many years he offered painting workshops to visitors who traveled to the Smoky Mountains. He didn’t stop at two dimensions either. His sculptural focus, primarily human portrait bronze works, are scattered across the nation. If you have seen the Dolly Parton statue out front of the Sevierville courthouse in Tennessee, then you know the work of Jim Gray.

By the end of his career in 2015, less than 200 out of more than 3,000 total painted images had been reproduced in limited or unlimited editions. The Jim Gray Gallery in the arts and crafts community of Gatlinburg, Tennessee, still carries a great selection of these images and continues to publish some remaining works yet to be released. Currently the gallery is in its 54th year and third generation of ownership.

Jim Gray passed away in December 2019 at the age of 87, but his artistic legacy lives on.
