Jamming in Marshall

A magical music jam occurs every Thursday evening in downtown Marshall, North Carolina, often hosted by Grammy winner Bobby Hicks.

At age 11, Bobby won the North Carolina Fiddling Championship, and his name became synonymous with bluegrass fiddling. Over his 60-plus year career, Hicks worked with Jim Eanes, Bill Monroe, Porter Wagoner, Judy Lynn, and for over 20 years with Ricky Skaggs.

Bobby has played on a number of signature fiddle recordings, including Monroe’s ‘Wheel Hoss’ and Skaggs’ ‘Highway 40 Blues,’ and has earned 10 Grammy awards. “He’ll tell you they make good doorstops, but we know he is proud of them,” said Laura Boosinger, executive director of The Madison County Arts Council.

The bluegrass jam sessions are Thursdays at Zuma Coffee, located at 7 Main St. in downtown Marshall.

It all begins at 7 p.m., but arrive early if you want a seat. All musicians are welcome to join in, but it’s fine just to sit and listen.
